The Ferrari Luce and the end of a very long argument
For seventy eight years the answer to "what makes a Ferrari a Ferrari" had a sound attached to it. In May, in front of a Calatrava sail in Rome, Maranello quietly removed the sound and dared everyone to finish the sentence anyway.
There is a particular kind of silence that only happens when several hundred people are waiting to hear something and it does not arrive. That silence happened in Rome on the evening of 25 May 2026, under the white concrete sail of Santiago Calatrava's Vela, when Ferrari rolled out the first fully electric car in its history and the car simply moved. No shriek. No downshift. No theatre. Just a long low shape crossing a floodlit floor without asking permission.
The car is called Luce. Italian for light. For most of its development it had been known internally and in the press as the Elettrica, which is the kind of placeholder name that tells you a company has not yet decided what story it wants to tell. Luce is the decision. It is not a model number, it is not a displacement, it is not a tribute to a dead driver. It is a noun about visibility, and it is the first hint that Maranello understood exactly how exposed it was going to be.
The part nobody expected
Ferrari did not design it. Not entirely, and not in the way Ferrari has designed every car it has built since 1947. The exterior and interior were led by LoveFrom, the studio founded by Jony Ive, the man responsible for the shape of the iPhone, working alongside Marc Newson. Ferrari Centro Stile, one of the most protected design institutions in the industry, shared the pen.
Understand what that means for a company like this one. Ferrari's design language is not decoration, it is doctrine. The proportions of a modern Ferrari are dictated by a front mid mounted engine and a rear transaxle, and every curve on the car exists to explain that layout to you from thirty metres away. Take the engine out and the doctrine has nothing to hold on to. Ferrari could have faked it, kept the long bonnet and the cab rearward stance and pretended there was still a V12 under there. Plenty of manufacturers have done exactly that.
Instead they handed the problem to two industrial designers with no emotional debt to the internal combustion engine, and the result is a car with clean sweeping volumes, almost no visual aggression, and a stance that reads more like a very expensive object than a very fast one. Sixty new patents came out of the programme. The interior, in particular, has more in common with a piece of furniture than with the carbon and Alcantara cockpit of an SF90.
Freed from the engine, the shape stopped arguing with itself. Whether that is a gain or a loss is the entire debate.
What is actually underneath
The engineering is not shy, which matters, because the design is. Luce uses a dedicated electric platform running an 800 volt architecture, with four motors, one at each wheel. They are permanent magnet synchronous units using Halbach array magnet arrangements, a technique borrowed from aerospace and particle physics that concentrates the magnetic field on one side of the array and cancels it on the other. In practice it means more torque for less magnet, and less weight for the same output.
The front pair spin to 30,000 rpm, the rear pair to 25,500. Total output is 772 kilowatts, which is a little over a thousand horsepower. Top speed is beyond 310 kilometres per hour. The battery is 122 kilowatt hours and the claimed range is above 500 kilometres.
Four independent motors is the part that will change how the car actually drives. Torque vectoring on a combustion Ferrari is a negotiation between a differential, a brake system and a very clever piece of software trying to distribute a single source of power. With one motor per corner, the car can add and subtract torque at each wheel individually, hundreds of times a second, with no mechanical intermediary. Everything Ferrari has learned about rotating a car under power for the last two decades can be applied directly rather than approximated.

Five seats and a boot
Here is the sentence that would have ended a career in Maranello twenty years ago. The first electric Ferrari is a four door with five seats and a six hundred litre boot.
It is easy to read that as capitulation and most of the internet did within about four minutes of the reveal. It is more interesting to read it as arithmetic. A 122 kilowatt hour battery is a large, flat, heavy object, and there are only so many places to put it. Once it is under the floor, the floor is high, and once the floor is high you either build a car that is uncomfortably tall for its width or you accept the extra length and use it. Ferrari used it. The people who can spend more than half a million euros on a car frequently have families, and until now Ferrari's answer to those families was a shooting brake with two rear seats and an apology.
There is also a commercial argument that nobody at Ferrari will state out loud. A four door with real luggage space is a car you can use on a Tuesday. Cars used on Tuesdays accumulate kilometres, service visits, tyre changes and, eventually, a second owner. That is a different business from selling objects that live under covers.
The market did not applaud
The morning after the reveal, Ferrari shares in New York fell more than five percent. That number was reported everywhere as a verdict on the car, which it almost certainly was not. Equity markets do not price sheet metal, they price the risk that a brand built on scarcity and sound has just walked into a category where neither is available.
Ferrari's executives responded with the only argument that matters in their world, which is that existing collectors are already asking for allocations. In a company that deliberately builds fewer cars than it can sell, the order book is a more honest signal than the share price. A first is a first. Whatever anyone thinks of the shape, the first electric Ferrari will be a fixed point in the marque's history, and there is a category of buyer who collects fixed points.
Both things can be true. The car can be a milestone and the strategy can still be risky. What Ferrari has actually done is separate two ideas that were welded together for three quarters of a century: the idea of a Ferrari as an emotional object, and the idea of a Ferrari as a loud one. If the first survives without the second, the company has a future in the electric era. If it does not, this becomes the most beautifully engineered cautionary tale in the industry.
The question they have not answered
What does it sound like. Ferrari has been experimenting for years with amplifying the genuine mechanical and electrical noise a drivetrain makes, as opposed to piping synthesised engine notes through the speakers, which every enthusiast can hear through instantly and which ages about as well as a ringtone. The company has patents in this area. It has said very little.
That reticence is telling. Sound is the one thing that cannot be solved with engineering excellence alone, because the target is not physical, it is emotional. You can measure 772 kilowatts. You cannot measure whether a noise gives someone goosebumps.
Deliveries begin in the final quarter of 2026. Between now and then the arguments will be conducted entirely in the abstract, by people who have seen photographs. The only opinion that will matter is the first one formed by someone who has driven it down a mountain road at seven in the morning, and that opinion does not exist yet.
